Duluth, MN - Woman shot by police, wounded outside Midway Township church after allegedly threatening deputies
Duluth, MN A 48-year-old Cloquet woman was in critical condition Friday after being shot twice by law enforcement officers in the parking lot of a Midway Township church.
The woman, who has not yet been identified by authorities, had threatened suicide Thursday night and was located by deputies in her vehicle in the parking lot of Augustana Lutheran Church, 3251 Midway Road, according to a report from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
At some point, the woman exited her car holding a firearm and threatened officers, the Sheriff's Office reported. Two officers fired their guns, striking the woman twice. She was taken to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, where she remained in critical condition on Friday morning.
Officers arrived at the church parking lot about 10:50 p.m. Thursday and the shooting incident occurred at about 12:16 a.m. Friday, St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman told the News Tribune.
Augustana Lutheran Church is located across from the Midway Town Hall and about halfway between U.S. Highway 2 and Interstate 35.
Law enforcement officers still on the scene well into Friday morning to secure the area, Litman said.
The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers from the Minnesota State Patrol, Hermantown Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Carlton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
